I am one of techs at JE PISTONS and also an engine builder. You can use non synthetic ATF too (works great).

Why does the cylinder hone job look like a poor mans attempt with clogged stones, coming from a high end shop? Haven't went to the article to read yet but to me, your stones are cutting bad and very uneven.

Is breakin a thing anymore? Today's finishes and tolerances don't need much breakin. Top fuel dragster will run brand new rings and cylinders with no break in... just sayin.

Proper way is to run it normal for a few minutes then run the dog shit out of it. If it was built properly it’ll hold up.

When I worked at Ford during the 70's and we had a vehicle come in using oil, Ford would have us pull the belts off and idle the engine until it overheated and blew coolant out the radiator overflow. Let it Cool overnight and do it one more time. Then send it home. Never had one come back again, using excessive oil.. I was told the high heat thins the oil on the cylinder wall and expands the piston and rings, forcing the rings against the cylinder walls, seating them.. seemed to work.

The problem is by the time you get the pistons race season is over lol

This is a good article that keeps talking about the “ideal” engine start-up. But what about the less that perfect conditions that make up the real world? There are so many variables that can (and often do) make for less than “ideal” conditions. 40 years of wrenching has shown me that “new parts” is no guarantee of a quality product. Thermostats stick, electric fans don’t come on, timing adjustments, fuel mixture problems, charging system problems, automatic transmission fluid level needs to be topped up, and it’s almost guaranteed to have a leak somewhere. The first 30 seconds of a new start up is, quite frankly, a semi-controlled panic. If something is not correct or can’t be corrected quickly, DO NOT continue with engine break in. You don’t want to ruin a new engine because you insisted on running it for 20 minutes while ignoring other issues.

Start being it to temp , take it for a ez ride , for about 20 minutes, come back check it over , and head to the drags and bet the shit out of it , never a problem, it’s ether going to hold together or break,

New build and start, set the engine at 2000rpm and run for 20 mins? Check oil pressure,drive for 10-15 miles in town. 30 plus years of building engines always done it the same. Longevity is in the parts inside. Build for what you plan on running. JE have always gone in all my big block builds.
